The county of Sussex is made up of West & East Sussex and has two cities as well as large number of notable towns. Chichester & Brighton are the two cities. Both of these cities are home to universities and are not far from the south coast of England.
Larger towns in Sussex include Arundel, Bognor Regis, Bexhill-on-Sea, Burgess Hill, Crawley, Eastbourne, Hastings, Horsham, Lewes, Petworth, Rye and WorthingCrawley, Eastbourne, Hastings, Horsham, Lewes, Petworth, Rye, Arundel, Bognor Regis, Bexhill-on-Sea, Burgess Hill and Worthing.
Sussex as a county stands close to the ancient kingdom of Sussex this was first established in the 12th Century. This was about a century and a half after Arundel Castle was originally built. Arundel castle was damaged in the English Civil War, it was restored during the 18th and 19th centuries. Arundel is a small market town on the South Downs and sits on the River Arun.
Brighton is not only a university city, but also a busy seaside resort, similar too Bognor Regis. Brightons Piers are world famous. The West Pier suffered a lot of damage in 2003 when it caught fire. There are now plans to replace it with a landmark called i360, which will be a 172m high tower, with views across the area.
One of the busiest towns in East Susses is Lewes it is the county town of East Sussex and is on on the River Ouse. With a population of around 16,000 and is well known for its excellent bonfire celebrations on November 5th.
The town of East Grinstead is in West Suxxex and has a population of twentynine tousand. East Grinstead has the headquarters in the UK of the Church of Scientology. The town, like many other towns in Sussex, is used by commuters for London.
It sis the second busiest airport in the UK and is located in Sussex ? Gatwick Airport. Gatwick is located in Crawley and is owned by BAA. In 2007 Gawtick saw over 35 million people. Three of the major airlines operate from the airport ? British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and EasyJet.
Worthing is another major area in Sussex, the borough has a population of almost one hundred thousand and is served by 5 railway stations ? East worthing, Worthing, West Worthing, Durrington-on-Sea and Goring.
